Types of Quilting Available:
Edge to Edge - a continuous line design of a repeated pattern that is quilted from edge to edge of the quilt. An economical and attractive way to finish your quilt. Several patterns are available.
$2.50 per square foot
Custom Quilting - a variety of quilting methods are used to suit the individual project such as stitch in the ditch, echo, stippling, meandering, feathers, and other fillers.
$4.00 to $6.00 per square foot depending on the complexity.
Binding - application of binding (supplied by the client) requires a 2 ½ inch strip of fabric sufficient to go around the quilt, pressed in half along the length. This is stitched to the front of the quilt and then hand stitched to the back.
$2.00 per linear foot.
Other Charges - minimum mounting fee of $35 regardless of size.
Each quilt is unique and quilting will be done to best suit
your creation and your pocketbook.
Calculation: width X length (inches) divided by 144 = # square feet
Example: 88” X 96” = 8448 / 144 = 58.7 sq ft
58.7 X $2.50 = 146.75 + $35 = $181.75
Preparation for Quilting:
Iron the top making sure seams are flat.
Check all seams as you iron to be sure they are secure. Open seams can cause tearing in the quilting process.
Remove any threads that are long or loose.
Be sure stitching is secure on all borders either by backstitching or sewing around the entire edge 1/8 inch from edge. This avoids seams opening up when mounting.
Embellishments such as buttons, beads or charms will not allow the quilt to roll smoothly and are dangerous when quilting. Please remove any of these items.
Apply any borders properly to avoid creating wavy borders. Borders are best measured through the center and two other spots, taking an average measurement. Attach the quilt to the border not the border to the quilt. Length-wise cuts of fabric are better as they will stretch less than crosswise cuts. Remember – quilting will not make it lie flat if it starts out wavy. If your border is wavy - remove it, re-measure, re-cut and reapply.
Backing and batting must be larger than the top by a minimum of 3 –4 inches. Ensure edges are straight.
Do not baste layers together as they are mounted separately on the machine for quilting.
NOTE: Extra charges will be applied for the above tasks having to be done by me prior to quilting.
Backing Tips:
100% cotton is always best. Polyester and poly/cotton stretch differently than cotton and can cause puckering in quilting. Polyesters tend to pill and encourage migration of batting fibers to the surface.
Choose backing of the same colour and intensity as the top. I prefer to use the same thread colour on top and bottom. A print is preferable to a plain fabric.
Wide backings are available from most quilting stores to avoid piecing backings.
Avoid the use of high thread count sheets for backing. This type of sheet, especially a new one, causes poor tension and constant thread breakage. If you use a sheet, pre-wash several times to soften it. Avoid thin sheets, which will not hold up over time.
Remove selvages from the fabric to avoid puckering.
Sew seams 5/8” and press open
Square the backing and ensure edges are straight. Fold it in half and lay it on a flat surface, you should have 90 degree corners.
Press backing well and fold carefully to avoid wrinkles.
